The shortage of specialists, the challenges posed by underserved areas and the chronic saturation of imaging services highlight the urgent need for innovative solutions.
It is in this context that a strategic partnership has emerged between two technology leaders: Enovacom, the healthcare subsidiary of Orange Business, and AdEchoTech, designer of MELODY, the first remote-controlled ultrasound robot. Their alliance offers a comprehensive and secure solution, aimed at making ultrasound examinations accessible to everyone, everywhere.
Medical emergencies: underserved areas and unsustainable delays
With nearly 30 million ultrasounds performed each year in France, this often vital examination is heavily impacted by the shortage of radiologists. Waiting times are getting longer and the distances to be travelled are becoming prohibitive, particularly in rural areas. This situation is creating an unsustainable overload for imaging services and increased pressure on hospital staff.
Remote ultrasound scanning is therefore emerging as a practical solution to overcome these barriers. It ‘relocates’ the expertise of a specialist (radiologist, gynaecologist) without requiring the patient to travel, thereby relieving the burden on hospitals.
Melody: the robotic arm for medical procedures
At the heart of innovation lies MELODY, the world’s first robotic remote ultrasound solution. Its certified by the US FDA, the European MDR and Health Canada. The result of expertise in precision mechanics and biomedicine, Melody is already deployed in more than seventy sites, with a total of 300,000 ultrasounds performed to date.
The concept is simple and effective:
- Expert Station: The specialist doctor controls the examination probe remotely.
- Patient Station: Installed in a peripheral medical facility (such as in Châteaubriant or at Bøda Hospital in Norway), a robotic arm replicates the specialist’s movements with millimetre precision.
- Local Presence: An assistant (midwife, nurse, radiographer) acts as the interface with the patient.
This device guarantees an immediate diagnosis of a quality equivalent to a face-to-face examination, as confirmed by François Wohrer, Director of Investment at Banque des Territoires. AdEchoTech offers a breakthrough innovation for one of the most commonly prescribed examinations in France.’
Tele-interpretation: Enovacom’s telehealth platform that makes telecare possible.
In order for TMF Santé‘s expert radiologists, Enovacom’s partners, to perform their remote interpretation procedures, they need to receive very high-quality images.
Enovacom’s role is to guarantee the exchange and transmission of data between the expert station and the patient station. This platform allows examinations to be carried out with a quality equivalent to that of an in-person ultrasound scan. All in a secure manner thanks to an HDS infrastructure.
The rapid adoption of this solution and the commitment of healthcare professionals are reshaping the landscape of healthcare. Here are the prospects:
- 850,000 TLR examinations expected in 2025.
- 4,000 ultrasounds performed remotely in 2024 by TMF Santé.
- More than 200 radiologists partnering with TMF Santé.
‘This robotic tele-ultrasound offering illustrates our ongoing commitment to providing the most comprehensive range of healthcare services to healthcare facilities and their patients,’ emphasises Quentin Vallet, Director of the Telemedicine Division at Enovacom.
A win-win workflow: speeding up treatment and increasing profitability
The complementary nature of the duo is the key to optimisation. AdEchoTech provides the device that enables remote medical procedures, while Enovacom provides the digital platform that allows the procedure to be carried out smoothly, efficiently and securely.
This synergy results in a radical optimisation of the workflow. Patients no longer have to travel, and specialists can conduct examinations at several remote sites in quick succession.
This model significantly increases patient throughput and operational efficiency. By reducing logistical constraints and optimising medical expertise time, this system establishes a more sustainable and virtuous model of care. Thus, where economic efficiency directly improves access to care.
‘The solution developed by this company [AdEchoTech] makes sense to us in terms of democratising and making healthcare more accessible, particularly medical imaging,’ adds Lionel MARY, Chief Executive Officer of the IDEC INVEST GROUP.
Outlook: exporting a French model of excellence
This strategic partnership does more than fill a gap. It lays the foundations for a new way of organising imaging care. More agile and less stressful for professionals.
Nicolas Lefebvre, CEO of AdEchoTech, emphasises the ambition of this mission: “We are honoured to have brought together investors with a strong awareness of public health issues and access to care for isolated, sometimes forgotten populations, both in France and internationally. “
By combining MELODY’s robotic performance with Enovacom’s secure digital infrastructure, access to ultrasound becomes a reality for all, marking a major and exportable milestone in the history of telemedicine.
